Native American Church Families

I'm a Stockbridge (Mohican) / Menominee / Oneida / Brothertown man living in Milwaukee trying to find where my Native ancestors got pegged with this name Church.

In surfing the churchtree site, my curiosity is peaked as my ancestors also have many ties to what is today upstate New York (Oneida lands in early 1800;s), Hudson valley (Mohican lands 1700's), Eastern Connecticut - including Stonington - (16-1700's), and Rhode Island (16-1700's). Perhaps a branch of the Church family kept moving west and intermarrying with my Christian Native ancestors...(Brothertown was formed as a community of Christian Indians near what is today Utica, New York)...from southern New England, to upstate New York, to Wisconsin???

I see some speculation on your site about a wife of someone in this family back in the 1700's with an Indian wife...

The earliest I can get for Church name in Wisconsin around the early 1900's: Frederick M. Church who's mothers name was Mary. Fred's son George was a Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican.

I also have Native ancestors who fought in the American Revolution...

Going back further, this is a very interesting possibility as I may very well be distantly related to Capt. Benjamin Church who killed King Phillip. I have Native ancestors who assisted the Wompanoag during the war...

Gives real meaning to "full circle" doesn't it?

BTW, I have many Church cousins who are members of the Stockbridge-Munsee band of Mohicans in Wisconsin.

Wondering where to explore further.

Thaks for any contacts we can create.

Name: Karen Moran

I have been doing research in my family history and have been looking at the Church website. My great-grandmother was Harriet Church, daughter of John Wesley Church 1834-1911. I can probably add some of her descendents if you want to add to your genealogy website.

Name: "Bonnie Church"

Hello Church family  I am the great granddaughter of Frank & Myrtle Church, my Grandparents were Ned & Myra Church, my father is Gene. I remember many summers and Sunday dinners & holidays spent at my grandparents home along the little Hoosick River. My sister and brothers & my cousins would go swimming in the Dayfoot (I'm sure that's not spelled correctly) and fishing in Grafton before it was Grafton Park. This web site takes me back to those days when life was simpler, thank you to all who have worked so hard to create this web site.

PS. Rich thank you for your posting, I have always been curious about our Native American ancestors, and have tried to trace back to the origin, I have found a site that may have a connection http://www.schaghticoke.com/index.php?page=history.summary traced to Connecticut. I think the reason it is so difficult to trace a specific Tribe, is because I believe there is more than one American Indian that married into the Church family. When I read your posting, the hair actually stood up on the back of my neck,  in my search I had stumbled across Stockbridge as a possible  point of origin, but was unsure as I have very little information to go on. I'm sorry I can't enlighten you with any information but you have enlightened me, as Connecticutt was where I had left off with my search, thanks again.

Peace and Good Health to you and all Churches out there, in these turbulant times
